Future Food Systems reported in March 2023 that a QUT-led project had developed a mobile platform able to navigate commercial greenhouse pipe rails using computer vision. Led by Chris Lehnert, the team worked with Australian grower P’Petual Holdings.
The platform combines deep-learning vision with mapping and recovery logic, including detection of unsuccessful attempts to enter or leave rows. After trials in a model greenhouse, researchers attached P’Petual’s fan-based pollination equipment and demonstrated hands-free tomato pollination across more than 30 rows in a commercial greenhouse. The report described prospective commercial partners, rather than confirming a finished commercial product.
