The University of the Free State opened HortiTech GrowLab at its Bloemfontein Campus on 19 February 2026. The facility is intended for teaching and applied research while reflecting the operating principles of commercial greenhouse production.

Integrated climate and fertigation management allows students and researchers to monitor variables including electrical conductivity, pH, irrigation volumes and crop response. The university highlights local challenges such as intense radiation, heat stress and variable water quality.

Bell peppers are the first crop, with trials examining different cultivars and rootstocks. Some produce is supplied to local markets, but the university identifies training and research as the facility’s main purpose. The opening establishes a platform for testing management decisions under South African conditions; it does not yet demonstrate that one greenhouse configuration or automation strategy delivers a particular return on investment.
