UC Merced announced a project on 18 August 2026 to turn light-active molecules into materials suitable for agricultural greenhouses. Chemistry researchers Hrant Hratchian and Ryan Baxter are building on earlier work with compounds whose light absorption and emission can be deliberately adjusted.

The approach uses engineered chromophores to capture ultraviolet energy and release part of it as visible light. Computational modelling and characterisation will guide the move toward deployable materials. The project is motivated by crop production under heat and water constraints, but the announcement presents a development pathway rather than established greenhouse yield gains or a finished commercial film.
