A Crop Science Centre report in June 2026 described experiments examining CP26, an antenna protein involved in the photosynthetic apparatus. Researchers altered CP26 expression in Arabidopsis alongside other factors controlling non-photochemical quenching, the process through which plants dissipate excess light energy as heat.
The results did not support a proposed direct role for CP26 in the tested forms of quenching. Instead, the team linked observed changes to altered organisation and interactions within the light-harvesting system. The work forms part of the RIPE effort to improve photosynthetic efficiency. It refines a biological target for further investigation rather than demonstrating a new yield-enhancing crop treatment.
