Researchers at SMART’s DiSTAP programme, Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory and MIT developed a nanosensor for indole-3-acetic acid, an auxin involved in plant growth and stress responses. The sensor uses polymer-wrapped carbon nanotubes whose near-infrared fluorescence changes in response to IAA.

The research reported direct monitoring in living tissues without genetic modification. Tests included Arabidopsis, Nicotiana benthamiana, choy sum and spinach, and examined responses to conditions such as low light and heat. The team described plans to combine sensing platforms and work with urban-farming partners. The June 2025 report presents a research capability, with practical deployment still being developed.
