Wageningen University & Research announced Team IDEAS as the winner of its fourth Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge on 15 January 2025. The competition involved algorithms managing dwarf-tomato cultivation, including lighting, heating, irrigation, carbon dioxide supply and harvest timing.

According to WUR, the winning strategy combined high planting density with effective resource management. Performance assessment considered crop returns and costs rather than yield alone. The account also discussed pest-management decisions and penalties associated with manual intervention.

WUR presented the result as a demonstration of autonomous cultivation under challenge conditions, while acknowledging remaining limitations. The announcement should therefore be read as evidence from a defined growing experiment, rather than a guarantee that the same strategy will transfer unchanged to every greenhouse or crop.
