NASA Earth Observatory reported on October 8 that satellite observations and direct conversations with Texas cotton growers are helping explain the pressure of drought and groundwater depletion. Landsat 8 images from September 2025 and September 2026 show a shift toward dry fields and depleted lakes around Lubbock.

Through NASA Acres, researchers and farmers are discussing how Earth-observation data could inform crop choices, cover crops, irrigation and restoration of playa lakes, which can help recharge groundwater. NASA’s August tour included local farms.

The report also highlights research published in September using deep learning to monitor thousands of playa lakes over three decades. The work found substantial lake declines in 15 of 45 counties examined. The report illustrates agricultural decision support, not a new irrigation product.
