KU Leuven describes its new Heverlee greenhouse complex as a research facility combining controlled growing conditions with high biosafety standards. The 3,360-square-metre complex contains 34 enclosed compartments, each with separate control of temperature, humidity, irrigation and lighting. Four growth chambers are also planned as part of the facility.

The university reports fossil-free energy for heating, rainwater collection and dedicated quarantine compartments for studying serious plant pathogens. Teaching rooms connect the facility with student practical work. Research topics include crop responses to light and climate, disease management and biological interactions. The complex provides experimental infrastructure; its opening does not itself demonstrate commercial greenhouse energy savings or higher crop yields.
