Wageningen University & Research is leading Greenhouse in Transition, a Netherlands–United States collaboration examining greenhouse design, cultivation and resource reuse. The September update describes work extending beyond efficient lighting and climate control to water, nutrients and working conditions.
Ideas include using industrial waste heat, recovering greenhouse surplus heat for buildings and assessing suitable treated water streams. Researchers are also considering alternative production sequences, such as raising young tomato plants indoors before transferring them to a greenhouse.
The programme brings together universities, technology suppliers and growers from both countries. Its aim is to develop concepts and demonstrations from which businesses can select useful elements, rather than deliver one universal greenhouse design. The proposed exchanges remain subject to distance, cost and food-safety constraints; the announcement does not establish performance for a completed integrated system.
