Cornell researchers reported that PhytoPatholoBot could navigate vineyard rows and analyse grape-canopy images for disease symptoms in near real time. The work brings together roboticist Yu Jiang, plant pathologist Katie Gold and colleagues, with findings published in the Journal of Field Robotics in August 2025.
The university’s September account describes testing across ten Cornell pathology vineyards and commercial vineyards. According to the study, disease detection and severity assessment were comparable to experienced human scouts while using computation suitable for a field robot. The system is intended to help locate disease and guide more targeted management, and its ground observations can support remote-sensing models. Commercial production was described as a startup ambition rather than an established, general-purpose replacement for vineyard scouting.
