Researchers at Kochi University of Technology and Kochi University developed a quadruped system to support fruit transport during harvesting and thinning. Their April 2026 paper addresses a practical orchard problem: carrying fruit is physically demanding, while heavier transport vehicles can be difficult to use on hilly or uneven ground.

The robot combines detachable harvest baskets with a powered basket for discarded fruit and voice-command control. The published example shows automatic disposal of thinned fruit. Rather than attempting to replace every harvesting action, the system concentrates on material handling around human workers. The study presents a research platform for difficult orchard conditions; the source does not establish widespread commercial deployment or a universal advantage over wheeled carriers.
