An IFPRI Ethiopia seminar on 30 September examined how AI could be adopted effectively in low-income countries. Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse presented work in progress at the ILRI campus, emphasizing the need to distinguish technical capability from demonstrated development impact.
The published account points to limited rigorous evidence and highlights an ongoing IFPRI-led Kenyan trial of large-language-model farm advice, expected to continue through March 2027. It reports no final trial result.
The discussion also stressed that improved information may not solve a farmer’s main constraint if incentives, services or other resources are missing. Its proposed assessment questions cover the problem being addressed, appropriate methods, continuing costs, local maintenance and evidence that could show an intervention has failed.
