University of Idaho researchers reported a nursery weeding robot that follows programmed rows, identifies unwanted plants with cameras and moves an electrical probe into contact with individual weeds. Developed with the U.S. Forest Service, the system targets seedling beds used to produce trees for reforestation. The university published the account on 28 January 2025.

The team reported weed-killing efficiency above 95% and described operation through a working day on a battery charge. Nursery staff observed a demonstration at Coeur d’Alene, where maintaining young conifers ordinarily requires seasonal labor. These figures come from the university’s account and participant statements, rather than a replicated performance study. Projected labor savings remain estimates; the report does not establish costs or reliability across a complete nursery season.
