An NSF-supported project announced by UT Austin on 8 September 2026 aims to reduce the computing burden carried by individual agricultural robots. FarmBrain proposes a private farm-wide cellular network linking machines to a shared local computer for demanding perception, planning and crop-analysis tasks.

Safety routines and immediate reactions remain on each robot. The research examines how to divide software, prioritise competing deadlines and respond when communications or shared computing fail. Delicate fruit handling is one motivating application. The team plans to release software and benchmarks, but lower robot costs and reliable fleet operation remain objectives to be demonstrated.
