The University of Essex announced that its spin-out Versatile RobotX had secured more than £1 million in investment and innovation support. The package involved the British Design Fund, Innovate UK support and Defra Farming Innovation Programme grants. The company develops machine-vision and robotic-manipulation systems for harvesting and crop handling.
Essex said the technology had undergone field trials with UK growers including Wilkin & Sons and JEPCO. The new funding is intended to improve product design, manufacturing readiness and customer engagement as the startup moves toward wider commercial activity. Company leaders also described robotics-as-a-service as a possible route to adoption. The announcement did not establish broad deployment, a public price list or independently verified savings for customers.
