John Deere announced its autonomous 8R-based tillage system on 4 January 2022 at CES. The package combined an existing tractor platform, a TruSet-enabled chisel plow, GPS guidance and perception hardware. Deere described six pairs of stereo cameras providing obstacle detection around the machine, alongside a geofence that checked whether it remained inside its operating area.
The proposed workflow still began with a farmer transporting the tractor to the field and configuring the job. Operations Center Mobile then supported starting the operation, viewing machine information and adjusting parameters such as speed and working depth. Alerts were intended to flag machine-health or work-quality problems. This historical announcement described a defined field operation; it did not establish unrestricted driverless operation across every farming task.
