In September 2023, AI4SoilHealth described plans for an open European digital infrastructure to assess and monitor soils. The project brought together 28 partners and planned data collection from farms and pilot sites across 11 EU countries.
Its workstreams covered soil-health indicators, field and laboratory measurement methods, harmonised monitoring services and user feedback. Planned outputs included a soil-health assessment framework and a free application for land managers. The project linked technical development with communication and training so users could understand the measurements. These were research and development objectives; the announcement did not establish that a completed system could already diagnose every farm’s soil condition.
