On 2 May 2024, the European Commission described the completion of AgriDataSpace, an 18-month coordination and support action preparing a common European agricultural data space. The project recommended a decentralised approach with farmers’ interests at its centre.

Rather than designing a system in isolation, the consortium mapped more than 400 existing data-sharing initiatives across Europe. It examined governance and business arrangements, considered the evolving legislative setting and developed a reference architecture and deployment roadmap. Recommendations had been presented at the concluding event on 25 April 2024. This was preparatory work for later deployment: a blueprint does not itself mean that farm software, sensors and machinery across Europe can immediately exchange data or that access conditions are uniform.
